Q: Can you tell me how to make bed coronets, etc. so they do not look cheesy? Also, where can I buy large grommets to make curtains with?

A: Hi Lynda,
You'll both large plastic grommets and stunning, decorative painted metal grommets.
A bed coronet (also known as a bed corona) is surprisingly easy to make. It is simply a lined or unlined rod pocket drape hung on a curved drapery rail.
Here are some quick steps to get you started:
You can also search under terms like bed coronet or bed corona to find other resources for bed coronet rails.
2. Measure from the top of the installed rail to the floor. This is the finished length.
3. Add 8" for the bottom hem and half of the circumference of the rail plus 1"
4. For the width of your fabric panel you'll measure from the front center of the installed rail around to the wall.
Multiply by 3. This is how wide you want your fabric to be. You'll likely need to piece 2 or 3 fabric widths to get this large of a panel.
5. I recommend lining your bed coronet with a contrasting fabric. Cut and piece the lining fabric to the same measurements.
6. Lay the fabric and lining right sides together. Sew 1/2" side seams. Turn right side out.
7. Fold the bottom edge up 4" and press. Then another 4" and press. Sew the bottom hem in place.
8. Fold the top edge down 1/2 of the rod circumference plus 1/2".
9. Sew along the bottom edge of the folded fabric to create a casing.
Make another panel just like this one.
Slide both sewn panels onto the coronet rail. Pull the sides back to reveal the bed and hang the drapes on some drapery tiebacks.
Happy sewing!
